Chewing the Fat – The Story of Fatandyz

It all started not so long ago, in 2004. The world was so different in those days. The Sopranos was in it’s 5th season, no one knew of a Bieber, President Obama was about to give his ‘break through’ speech at the Democrat National Convention in November and I was working for a large cable television company (before the owners committed fraud forcing the company into bankruptcy).

For those of you who have never worked for a cableTV company; Cable TV offices are frequently visited by Networks trying to promote their channels and shows. Employees are given promo gifts from the networks. These gifts are pretty much useless to anyone who isn’t a fan of the particular show. From 2001 to 2004, I collected many items from HBO, STARZ, Showtime, etc. Items ranged from DVD’s to (probably the strangest), a miniature office water cooler from the Oxygen Network.

One day I was the big winner of a Sopranos baseball jersey. I had no intention of wearing it and my co-worker suggested I sell it on eBay. I was hooked. I began to clean out my closet of all the entertainment promo items. Sold them on eBay…and was very happy to pass the items on to someone who had a greater appreciation than I.

Meanwhile my girlfriend had been entering online contest like a lunatic. Her first prize was a 1 year supply of Mountain Dew in the form of 12-pack gift certificates. Did you know that people LOVE Mountain Dew? The Dew certificates went very quickly.

Over the next year or so, I scoured yard sales and flea markets. I’m a sucker for nostalgia and travel. My free time was spent traveling around looking for collectibles and passing them on through eBay. Eventually I started going to estate auctions. Old country auctions are great! Where else can you pick up a box of 1969 moon landing newspapers and boat motor at the same time?!

So…we arrive at 2007. One of my good musician friends, who had moved away, spent most of the summer back home. We both enjoy ‘picking’. We spent most days scouring thrift stores, flea markets and lawn sales. I would look for anything collectible, he concentrated more on vintage clothes. Up to this point, I would keep my eye out for unique clothing items…I had found a 1984 Jackson Tour Jacket, a couple of Queensryche concert shirts and few other items, but my friend was looking for items to wear. Western shirts, cotton/poly tees, etc. That opened a whole new world for me. Suddenly I remembered all the clothes I had growing-up. From skateboarding clothes to my favorite shirt, that Iron Maiden Seventh Son tee. I found myself searching for clothes from my younger years.

For the last 3-4 years I have spent much of my spare time searching for anything vintage. Keeping some, passing the rest onto others. I’ve taken road trip vacations across the country – stopping at thrift stores along the way. I really enjoy knowing that I was able to find a unique item and pass it on to someone that will continue the preservation.

There you have it, the story of Fatandyz. Keeping the past alive, one collectible at a time. A wise old man once told me, “We spend our entire adult life, chasing our childhood”. I hope I’m making that ‘chase’ a little easier.
